Indian vehicle exports up 38.1%
NEW DELHI: Mirroring the growth in domestic market, exports of 'Made-in-India' vehicles soared 38.1 per cent during the first quarter this fiscal.

A total of 1.52 lakh units were shipped during April-June 2004 over 1.10 lakh units during the same period last year, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) data.

In value terms, automobile exports crossed one billion mark last fiscal.

Car exports recorded robust growth of 32.5 per cent at 35,310 units. Exports of Maruti Udyog, however, dipped marginally by 2.53 per cent to 12,011 units.

Hyundai Motor India, which has made India its global production base for compact car 'Santro' and sells the car as 'Atos Prime' in overseas markets, witnessed a massive 208.1 per cent jump at 13,998 units. Ford India, the Indian arm of the second-biggest automaker Ford, recorded a rise of 1.31 per cent at 8,447 units.

Indigenous carmaker Tata Motors, which has inked a deal with UK-based MG Rover to sell its premium small car 'Indica' as 'City Rover', saw a marginal dip of 3.01 per cent at 795 units.

Commercial vehicle exports also drove northward by registering a rise of 102.5 per cent at 5,152 units.

While exports of Medium and Heavy (M&H) commercial vehicles climbed 119.5 per cent to 2,566 units that of Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) rose 88 per cent at 2,586 units. M&H truck exports went up 172.5 per cent to 1,559 units while M&H buses' surged 68.6 per cent to 1,007 units.

Exports of light trucks grew 134.1 per cent to 2,353 units; exports of light buses, however, registered a dip of 37 per cent at 233 units. Two-wheeler exports grew 48 per cent to 93,162 units as motorcycle and stepthrus registered a rise of 39.8 per cent at 61,378 units.

Scooter and scooterette exports also jumped 61.6 per cent at 21,383 units while its sibling, mopeds, registered a 79.3 per cent rise at 10,401 units.

Motorcycle exports of Hero Honda and Bajaj Auto surged by 58 and 82 per cent at 13,002 and 29,741 units respectively.

Exports of Chennai-based TVS Motor Co. witnessed a growth of 122.8 per cet at 8,846 units but that of Yamaha skidded 47 per cent at 7,672 units.

Scooter exports of Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India went up 72.3 per cent to 13,209 units while Bajaj Auto recorded a rise of 103.9 per cent.

Exports of Pune-based Kinetic Enginering slipped 82.8 per cent to 93 units while its group company Kinetic Motor, which makes automatic scooters, registered a rise of 186.1 per cent at 784 units.

Majestic Auto's exports dived 40 per cent at 411 units.

In the moped category, TVS and Majestic registered rise of 122.7 and 88.6 per cent at 1,332 and 8,865 units respectively.

But, moped exports of Kinetic Engineering nosedived 59.4 per cent at 204 units.
