Hybrid Q7 is on the way for 2008
Audi is offering buyers of its Q7 4x4 the option a more powerful but less polluting 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine.
The engine, which is now fitted with a diesel particulate filter, has an improved fuel economy of 34.9mpg, compared with the previous engine's 33.6mpg. Its carbon dioxide output is also down from 279g/km to 206g/km.
However, it has improved power of 237bhp, up from 230bhp, giving it 10% more pulling power at 406lb ft, and a faster 0-62mph time of 8.5sec, down 0.6sec.
Q7s fitted with the new engine are available from £38,075 in standard, SE and S Line trim.
Future environmental developments
Audi has also revealed it is working on a variety of greener engines, ranging from bioethanol and natural gas-powered motors to petrol/electric hybrid systems.
A hybrid Q7 is expected to go on sale towards the end of 2008, combining power from a 177bhp 3.6-litre petrol engine with an electric motor, which provides an additional 48bhp.
The electric motor will power the car up to speeds of 30mph.
Early figures suggest the hybrid system will reduce carbon dioxide output by 23% compared with the equivalent non-hybrid car.
