More Japanese concept madness emerges ahead of the Tokyo show in the shape of the Mitsubishi i MiEV Sport.
Taking the tiny-footprinted principle of the i and adding a fastback - or the back end from a VW Beetle - the i MiEV (Mitsubishi innovative Electric Vehicle) Sport is Mitsu's view of an electric-powered mid-engined future.
A high-capacity lithium ion battery sits in the middle of the i MiEV Sport's floor, sending power to three electric motors - one in each of the front wheels and a single motor for the rear axle.
This provides a continuous four-wheel-drive system, and while power is rated at a modest 117bhp, if our calculations are correct the i MiEV Sport puts out a massive 501lb ft of torque. No word on acceleration, but top speed is quoted as 110mph.
Naturally, there are a few daft concept touches: a photovoltaic generator on the roof and the same 'Green Plastic' plant-based resin technology as we saw in the Concept cX in Frankfurt.
Overall, though, it's a concept not a million miles away from the i EV that Paul Horrell drove just a few weeks back. Not sure those funky wheels will make it to production, though.
