SOUTHFIELD: General Motors Corp, the world's biggest automaker, said it will offer 48-month leases without any money down or a first-month's payment through March 31 as it tries to boost US sales after a slower-than-expected January.
The “GM Sign & Drive'' lease programme, which starts on Monday, is available on most 2004-model General Motors cars and trucks, company said in a statement.
The programme isn't offered in New York or Rhode Island, the automaker said.
General Motors' January sales rose 2 per cent from the year-earlier month, less than the 3.3 percent industry increase and less than analysts expected.
Asian companies such as Toyota Motor Corp captured a record 35.6 per cent of the US market during the month. General Motors' US market share fell in 2003, erasing two years of gains.
Company executives have said they want to start this year more strongly than 2003. General Motors said it would give away 1,000 vehicles through its “Hot Button'' programme to attract consumers to its dealerships
