| 2008 Jaguar X-Type and XK Range Make London Debut |
 |
LONDON - The release here at the Canary Wharf Motorexpo of the 2008 Jaguar X-Type and XK lineup is significant for what the Ford brand did not say. That is, the disappointing X-Type is apparently bound for extinction.
Inside Line U.S. supplier sources say that the British automaker is expected to "let the X-Type trundle on for a bit and then let it die within two to three years."
"It is not to be directly replaced," one source said. He recited a litany of complaints about the entry-level X-Type, noting that a major problem is that there has not been enough differentiation from the Ford Mondeo. The X-Type is built on the Mondeo platform. In addition, there were quality concerns and fear that the X-Type was "too downmarket" for many tastes.
Jaguar's Tuesday unveiling was notable in that the X-Type lineup has shrunk in the home market. Jaguar said it is dropping the Classic and Sport derivatives. The refreshed model, which gets a new grille and two new paint colors, is being hyped as a "greater value," with "changes to exterior styling without generating a price increase."
Regarding the XK and XKR, Jaguar says it gets luxury options previously found only on the uplevel XKR Portfolio Special Edition. Those include, among other things, polished five-spoke 20-inch Cremona alloy wheels and an Alcon high-performance braking system.
The brain trust at Coventry apparently is still resistant to a Jaguar crossover, sources told Inside Line. A Jag competitor to the Porsche Cayenne had been looked at but thus far has not been adopted by the brand.
