Wearing helmet compulsorily
Sale of helmets is on the upswing with the government rule that comes into force June 1 that two-wheeler riders must wear helmets compulsorily in the cities of Chennai, Madurai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Salem and Tirunelveli.

The Tamil Nadu government brought a rule in 1984, making helmets compulsory for two-wheeler riders. At the time, people felt that their right to individual freedom had been snatched from them. The DMK government then removed the rule in 1989.

In the meantime two-wheeler population grew in leaps and bounds in Chennai and other cities. Accidents also became aplenty. To prevent these accidents, the government brought back the rule of two-wheeler riders compulsorily wearing helmets and fixed June 1 as the deadline for implementing the rule.
