| T&E urges faster implementation of Euro-5 and 6 emissions standards |
 |
Transport & Environment (T&E), the European environmental lobby group, has seized on the recent US launch of Mercedes-Benz’s E320 BlueTec diesel car to call on the European Parliament to speed up the proposed Euro-5 and Euro-6 emissions standards.
The E320 BlueTec is the first of a new generation of diesels, using urea exhaust after-treatment shortly to be adopted by other German manufacturers for the US market, that meet strict new US emissions standards which will not be matched by EU emissions limits until 2015 under present legislative plans. A plenary session of the European Parliament is due to vote in November on a resolution passed by the Parliament’s environment committee, which effectively delays implementation of Euro-5 standards until 2009 and Euro-6 until September 2014.
- Earlier this week T&E published research on individual manufacturers’ average CO2 emissions, showing Ford, Renault, Fiat and PSA to be among a minority of volume manufacturers present in EU markets capable of meeting the European manufacturers’ association ACEA’s voluntary target of 140 g/km CO2 average emissions by 2008.
