| PSA Twins: C-Crosser/4007 SUVs Debut |
 |
That is how one high-ranking PSA official described the company's new SUV to Inside Line today. The new model is being launched under the Citroën C-Crosser and Peugeot 4007 names.
If they look familiar, that's because the new French SUV twins are essentially badge-engineered versions of the second-generation Mitsubishi Outlander.
To be assembled by Mitsubishi in Japan at the rate of 30,000 per year, split evenly between the two PSA brands, the C-Crosser and 4007 share the same greenhouse, doors and mechanical layout as the Outlander. However, reworked front ends, with Citroën and Peugeot's own individual styling cues, help distinguish them from their Japanese sibling. By comparison, the Mitsubishi appears much more visually conservative.
At launch in mid-2007, the C-Crosser and 4007 will be available with one engine choice, a 2.2-liter four-cylinder diesel produced by PSA and mated to a standard six-speed manual gearbox. It produces 156 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. A particulate filter is standard. Since the new Outlander has a 170-hp 2.4-liter gasoline engine, it is expected the French SUV twins will also adopt that unit over time.
The new high-riding Citroën and Peugeot share the same Mitsubishi-sourced MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension. According to PSA, it has been extensively reworked to give each car its own individual character and make them suitable for European conditions.
The four-wheel-drive transmission works in nominal two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, and there's a differential lock that can be engaged in low-grip conditions.
Inside, the C-Crosser and 4007 have the same optional third-row seat as the Outlander, meaning they can each accommodate up to seven occupants in a traditional two-plus-three-plus-two layout. The tailgate opens in two sections in a fashion similar to that of the BMW X5.
