Choi takes Chrysler lead with Els in pursuit
South Korea's K.J. Choi fired a five-under 66 to take the early second-round lead at the Chrysler Championship on Friday, one shot clear of the chasing pack led by South African Ernie Els.

Playing the back nine first at the Palm Harbor Copperhead course, Choi looked ready to take a tighter grip on top spot but a double-bogey on the par three eighth spoiled what had been an error-free day leaving him on a midway total of eight-under 134.

Els, chasing his first PGA Tour win in two years and a place in next week's season-ending Tour championships, surged into contention with a 66 that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

Joining the world number seven on seven-under 135 are a pair of Americans, overnight leader Brian Gay (71) and Jonathan Byrd (67).

Sitting three shots off the pace are Ted Purdy (68), Mark Calcavecchia (71) and David Branshaw, who returned the round of the day so far with a seven-under 64.

World number six and 2003 Chrysler winner Retief Goosen continued to struggle, failing to break par for the second consecutive day with a two-over 73.

Another disappointing round leaves the South African and twice U.S. Open winner at three-over 145 and in danger of missing the projected two-over cut.

Australian Adam Scott, the world number four and highest ranked player in the field, also needs a good run to make the weekend. He was one-over after three holes and for the tournament.
