Sale of Avon Automotive: company will consult to end-June on redundancies
Thursday, June 01, 2006
Avon Rubber Co's conditional sale of its automotive division for £63 million to US-based Red Diamond Capital Partners, announced a week ago, will result in a so far undetermined number of job losses from the firm's Wiltshire factory, reported the Wiltshire Times on 26 May. The statutory 30-day period for consultation with employee representatives has been extended to 60 days.
The Melksham-based Avon Rubber is henceforth to concentrate on its respiratory protection, dairy, aerosol gasket and engineered fabrication activities. A larger loss of jobs at Avon Automotive - 273 - occurred in 2002 when its Trowbridge plant was closed.
Bringing more bad news for automotive jobs in Wiltshire, Trelleborg Automotive's Trowbridge plant announced 75 redundancies last week, representing about one third of the workforce, which supplies GM among others. It had already announced redundancies in January this year.
