Mahindra & Mahindra has commercially launched its electric three-wheeler Bijlee in the Delhi territory. According to a senior M&M official, “The permission for Delhi has come around 10 days back and currently registration of the vehicles is in progress. We initially plan to have a commercial launch in small numbers in the Delhi market. We are looking at around 100 units in Delhi in course of the next two months."
The Bijlee has been priced at Rs 3.32 lakh (ex-Delhi) and is expected to do 90-100 kilometres on one charge. The vehicle has a very low running cost with life-time cost per passenger working out to 48 paise. The Bijlee that M&M is domestically selling is the new improved version which was initially meant for the export market.
The company is yet to receive the permission for commercial running of the vehicle in Mumbai. Despite the initial enthusiasm shown by the Maharashtra government, the approval from the RTA (for Mumbai) and STA (for rest of Maharashtra) are yet to come through.
M&M is also looking at entering the Tamil Nadu market and is specifically looking at Chennai and Coimbatore. The company is also applying for starting commercial runs in Kerala. Meanwhile, the company has also started selling the electric three-wheeler in Agra.
