| Jeep Wrangler a "Smash" in Detroit |
 |
DETROIT — The redesigned 2007 Jeep Wrangler made its public debut here at the North American International Auto Show with a new engine and updated sheet metal.
But it was the introduction that had people talking. Jeep, the company most known for dramatic debuts, drove the new Wrangler from the introduction stage, out into the hallway of the convention center, through a plate glass window and across the street to a raised podium along Jefferson Avenue in downtown Detroit. (See video)
As for specs, the new Wrangler offers a new pushrod 3.8-liter V6 that packs 205 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque, and replaces the current 4.0-liter inline six. The 3.8 can be equipped with either a six-manual or four-speed automatic gearbox.
At first glance, the '07 Wrangler doesn't look radically different from its predecessor — by design. The classic Jeep, however, gets all-new sheet metal and some serious upgrades to its suspension and driveline.
The '07 model has a wheelbase that's 2 inches longer and a track that's 3.5 inches wider — two key dimensions that should help improve stability on on-road driving comfort. But the new Jeep also boasts improved ground clearance, improved springs and shocks, upgraded transfer cases, as well as larger wheel-and-tire combinations, up to 18 inches.
Safety gear includes electronic stability program, electronic roll mitigation and seat-mounted side airbags.
The longer wheelbase and wider track mean more interior space. The cockpit has been redesigned, with a new instrument panel and front bucket seats, plus additional cargo space behind the rear seats.
Models include Wrangler X, Sahara and Rubicon. The new Jeeps arrive this fall.
