| Asian Onslaught: Korean Automakers Sell a Record 5.2 Million Vehicles in 2005 |
 |
SEOUL Ñ Strong global sales helped South Korea's five automakers sell a record 5.2 million vehicles worldwide in 2005, up 16 percent from 2004. At the same time, the Chinese government reported that the country became a net exporter of cars in 2005 for the first time.
Hyundai Motor led the South Korean industry by increasing its global sales to a record 2.5 million units in 2005. Sales by its Kia affiliate rose 14 percent to 1.3 million units. GM Daewoo Auto & Technology sold 1.2 million vehicles in 2005, up 29 percent.
China said its auto exports rose 134 percent in the first 10 months of 2005. It did not release details about 2005 export volume, but the Associated Press estimates that China's full-year auto exports should total about 125,000 vehicles.
