Diesel power is now available in Suzuki's Grand Vitara 4x4.
The 127bhp 1.9-litre engine is only available in the five-door version of the car, and, with prices starting at £16,999, it's a whopping £1500 more expensive than the 138bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine.
The diesel takes 0.7sec longer than the 2.0-litre petrol to reach 62mph with a time of 13.2sec, while its top speed is 3mph slower, at 106mph.
Fuel consumption is 5.7mpg better than the 2.0-litre petrol on the combined cycle, reaching 36.7mpg. Although emissions are lower, the newcomer is in the same 31% company car tax bracket as the petrol, because all diesels now have to pay an extra 3% penalty.
Standard equipment is identical to petrol models, with front, side and curtain airbags, climate control, electric windows and CD player all standard.
