| Automotive sector is now third-largest PCB consumer |

The automotive market is one of the largest consumers of embedded electronics products in Europe, according to a report by Hermann Strass, a German correspondent of the specialist Embedded Computing magazine.
In Germany, the embedded automotive market is now the largest segment of the embedded electronics market (almost 43 per cent), according to the central organization of the electrical and electronics industry in Germany (ZVEI).
In PCB consumption, automotive is in the number three position in Europe (22.1 per cent of demand) and growing fast (by 23.4 percent last year). Germany produces the most PCBs in Europe (34.8 per cent), and the automotive sector is in the number one position (with a 32 per cent market share and 37.2 per cent annual growth). The automotive sector is also the largest consumer of connectors (37 per cent) in Germany.
It is estimated, says Mr Strass, that automotive manufacturers' consumption of embedded electronics will increase by about 11 per cent per year to 2008, when Europe will be the biggest automotive electronics market (worth about US $10 billion), almost double the value of the US market, and more than double the Japanese market.
About 25 per cent of the value of today's cars is in their electronics content; this is forecast to increase to about 40 per cent in 2010.
