MADD Kicks Off 2005 Strides for Change 5K Walk October 29 at Milam Park
Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has announced its signature walk, Strides for Change, in San Antonio. A 5K, non-competitive walk, Strides for Change will be an opportunity for corporations and individuals to team up with MADD in its mission to "keep our communities safe."

"Texas has the largest rate of fatal drunk-driving accidents in the nation and in 2003, the Greater Alamo Area had the third highest percentage of those fatalities in the state," said Linda Kitazaki, Interim Executive Director of MADD South Texas Region. "Through Strides for Change, the entire community has the opportunity to help make a positive change in increasing the safety of Texas roadways and help our youth protect themselves."

This year's Strides for Change host family is the Munoz family of Eagle Pass. On New Year's Eve 2004, 11-year-old Hector Munoz Jr. was hit and killed by a drunk driver while his family watched. Since that time, Hector Sr., Terry and Francisca Munoz have dedicated their time and energy to raising funds for the MADD Strides for Change walk in the name of their son through hosting such events as a raffle, bar-b-que, and a charity softball tournament that united members of the community in Eagle Pass and raised awareness of the dangers of drunk driving. In addition, Hector Jr.'s 5th grade classmates formed FADD (Friends Against Drunk Driving) to continue on through the years in Hector's name.

"It is so important for our community to come together and help to support this worthy cause," said Mark Perez, owner of Complete Auto and Boat Center, presenting sponsor of the MADD Strides for Change walk. "This organization has a profound impact on the lives and safety of our children."

Strides for Change is a 5K, non-competitive walk that enables corporations and individuals to team up with MADD in keeping our children and communities safe. Participants form teams of 10 or more and are asked to raise $100 each through pledges. Walkers can enjoy a number of other activities during the event, such as a Health and Safety Fair, Kid's Zone with activities for children and a pet area especially for their four-legged friends.

"Drunk driving is the nation's most frequently committed violent crime. Underage drinking is the No. 1 youth drug problem, and MADD served more than 30,000 victims and survivors in 2004. It is time for everyone to realize that we need the support of the entire community to solve this problem and to save lives," said Glynn Birch, MADD National Board President.

Walkers and their pledge supporters are key in securing the funds necessary to benefit MADD's lifesaving mission. For example, a $25 donation to the organization enables MADD to connect with 20 safe drivers who pledge to "Tie One on for Safety" during the holidays and provide each with a red ribbon and safe driving tips.

"By bringing MADD's mission to stop drunk driving and Nissan's commitment to child safety, the Strides for Change walks will raise public awareness and funds to support the prevention of traffic fatalities," said Robert Yakushi, Nissan North America, Inc. director of public safety, regulatory and accessory quality. "Nissan is proud to be a part of these events and is not only a sponsor, but our employees have formed teams to raise money for MADD as well."

Nationally sponsored by Nissan North America, Inc., the MADD Strides for Change Walk will celebrate the organization's 25th anniversary of lifesaving work and promote safe driving and fundraising for educational programs to make communities safer throughout the country. The program began in Dallas and travels to a total of 14 markets nationwide.

Local residents can register for the walk as an individual, or form a team with their family, friends or company.
