| Nissan reports 5.5% fall in quarterly operating profit |

Nissan Motor has reported a 5.5% drop in quarterly operating profit, blaming competitive conditions in the US market. Nissan has scaled down expectations of growth and expects raw materials and exchange rates to allow it to do no more than maintain its earlier net profit forecast for the full year to end March - of £2.5bn, a 0.9% increase on 2004/5.
For the July to September quarter, Nissan's operating profit was just under £1bn, representing a margin reduced to 8.7% from 10.3% a year earlier. For the year to the end of March Nissan has kept its forecast for operating profit at £4.22bn, 1% up on its 2004/5 result.
Nissan's quarterly net profit rose 8.1% to £608m, reflecting the fact that the company had included a one-off loss in the same period a year earlier.
