| Mitsubishi Planning New V6 Outlander for U.S. |
 |
TOKYO - Mitsubishi will launch its new Outlander crossover SUV for America at the 2006 New York Auto Show next April.
At that time, Mitsubishi is expected to announce details of the new top-end V6 version that has been specially developed for the United States and is still officially under wraps.
Mitsubishi's new shape Outlander SUV is already on sale in Japan, powered by a compact new-generation four-cylinder, 2.4-liter engine. This is one Mitsubishi version of the new, eco-friendly "world" engine that was codeveloped with DaimlerChrysler and Hyundai.
Japan's aluminum-block 2.4 DOHC MIVEC four produces 168 hp under the hood of the redesigned Outlander. But Mitsubishi knows America wants - and expects - a V6, so a new 3.0-liter V6 has been developed to make sure the Outlander is competitive.
Toyota's soon-to-launch RAV4 will get a V6. So, eventually, will Honda's redesigned CR-V that bows in 2006. However, with gas prices at $3 a gallon and counting, Mitsubishi may still find a strong market for the less fuel-thirsty 2.4-liter, so a V6 may not necessarily be the be-all and end-all it's been in the past.
What this means to you: Mitsubishi's back on track with the Outlander, and a V6 will sweeten the pot even more.
