Struggling Ford Limits Bathroom Breaks at Navigator Plant
WAYNE, Mich. - Ford officials say extra-long bathroom breaks at its truck plant here are slowing production of the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator sport-utility vehicles. Supervisors will begin collecting weekly data on the amount of time workers spend on bathroom breaks and "respond appropriately," according to a plant memo distributed on Tuesday.

"In today's competitive environment, it is important that Michigan Truck plant immediately address this concern to avoid the risks associated with safety, quality, delivery, cost and morale," the memo said.

The 48-minute bathroom break limit is spelled out in the United Auto Workers contract that covers local plant rules. Sales of the Expedition and Navigator have been plummeting for much of the year as high gas prices prompt consumers to switch to more fuel-efficient models. A Ford official told Inside Line that the company expects sales of many of its SUVs, including the Explorer, to be down "more than 50 percent" in October.

What this means to you: Or...you could just build cars that people want. Times are not good in Motown.
