| New Buick Crossover Christened "Enclave" |
 |
DETROIT - General Motors is racing to fill its lineup with hot crossover vehicles, including a new SUV that will be smaller than its Chevrolet Equinox, Pontiac Torrent, and Saturn Vue. The Detroit News said the automaker is considering the possible introduction of its first small, futuristic-looking Cadillac in the segment.
The Buick Enclave is the sister vehicle of the GMC Acadia crossover, a 2008 model, and the Saturn Outlook crossover, which is due to hit showrooms in fall 2006. The Enclave is due out in spring 2007. The Oxford Encyclopedic English Dictionary says "enclave" means "a group of people who are culturally, intellectually, or socially distinct from those surrounding them." The styling of the Enclave is inspired by that of the Buick Centieme concept.
GM vice chairman Robert Lutz said that GM would grow its crossover lineup from seven entries to 14 in the next four years. The new crossovers will primarily be powered by fuel-efficient four- or six-cylinder engines, but he added each "will be compatible" with versions of the company's hybrid gas-electric system under development.
GM estimates that crossovers will account for more than 2.5 million sales in the United States this year, and that figure could grow to 3.5 million units by 2010.
What this means to you: It's a crossover world, and GM wants to be a major player in it
