Mitsubishi Agrees to Supply Smart Engines
TOKYO - Mitsubishi Motors announced today that it has struck an agreement with DaimlerChrysler, manufacturer of Smart minicars, to supply engines for the next generation of the tiny Smart Fortwo.

The 660cc, three-cylinder turbocharged unit will be the same one that will be used in the new Mitsubishi "i" minicar, due to be launched on the Japanese market in January. The new Smart Forwo is scheduled to make its debut in 2007.

The news follows a cooling-down period between DaimlerChrysler and Mitsubishi. The former had a controlling stake in the Japanese carmaker, but since April 2004 DCX announced an end to its financial support, and since then Mitsubishi has tried to come up with a recovery plan. Nevertheless, there are several existing connections between the two companies, including a newly developed engine family, the Dodge Dakota-based Mitsubishi Raider, and the Smart-based Mitsubishi Colt.

What this means to you: When they're not trying to squeeze each other out of business, car companies are working together. Cooperation is the biggest trend in the auto business these days
