DETROIT General Motors has selected its new vice president of U.S. sales from within the corporation, even though GM CEO Fritz Henderson said on Wednesday that the automaker "would benefit from a fresh perspective." Susan Docherty, 46, currently the Buick-GMC general manager, was appointed to the position of vice president of U.S. sales at GM.
She replaces Mark LaNeve, 50, whose departure was announced on Wednesday by Henderson. LaNeve's departure comes after the automaker's sales dropped 36 percent during the first nine months of the year.
LaNeve is considered by GM insiders to be one of Docherty's mentors within the corporation. Docherty's long rmncludes serving as marketing director and brand manager for the Cadillac Escalade. LaNeve served as general manager of Cadillac, in addition to other duties with the automaker.
In a statement on Wednesday, GM said it "will look outside to fill the Buick-GMC general manager position."
"This will infuse new ideas and an outside perspective into our marketing efforts," said Henderson.
Docherty, who was a Sloan Fellow at Stanford University, has held a number of positions at GM, including Hummer general manager and general manager for the Western Region.
