NEW DELHI: Availability of easy credit, introduction of new models and a spate of freebies and hefty discounts by dealers and manufacturers helped passenger cars drive through May with a 13.02% surge in sales. The nearly a dozen car makers in India together sold 68,516 units during the month.
This, coupled with an equally strong double-digit growth in sales of motorcycles propelled the entire Indian automobile sector to grow by 19.8% at 757,188 units in May 2005, compared to 632,123 units in same month last year.
Domestic sales alone rose by 19.8% to 694,673 units while exports marked a 19% growth to 62,515 units, according to latest data released by Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam).
The country’s largest carmaker Maruti Udyog’s sales moved showed a 5% growth to 34,382 units while Hyundai Motor India nearly doubled its sales — thanks to a huge demand for its compact car Santro in both the domestic and export markets — to 13,875 units.
Two-wheeler manufacturers rode through through the month with a 22.23% surge in sales at 558,518 units. In the motorcycle segment, Hero Honda and Bajaj Auto powered domestic sales.
